A video shared on Facebook claims former President Donald Trump gave a speech in Newport News, Virginia on July 27.
Verdict: Misleading
The video included in the post shows a speech Trump gave in 2020, not July 2022.
Fact Check:
Trump, who lost the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden, has been giving speeches across the U.S. in recent months, according to The Washington Post. The former president is expected to announce whether he will run for president in 2024 by the end of the year, the New York Post reported.
The Facebook video claims to show an hour-long speech Trump made this week. “LIVE – President Donald Trump in Newport News, VA #Virginia Trump – July 27, 2022,” reads the video’s caption.
While the video is genuine, it does not show a speech the former president gave this week. An internet search reveals the footage stems from a speech Trump gave in Newport News, Virginia in September 2020. The same footage can be found on C-Span and the verified YouTube account of 13News Now, both of which date the speech to Sept. 25, 2020.
During the speech, Trump discussed the upcoming 2020 presidential election and at one point announced he had extended the moratorium on off-shore drilling in Virginia and North Carolina, according to The Virginia-Pilot and a transcript of the speech.
This is not the first time social media users have circulated old Trump speeches and claimed they were recent. Check Your Fact recently debunked a video that claimed to show the former president speaking in Alabama in 2022, but actually showed him speaking in the state in 2021.
