Former President Donald Trump was "relieved" to be acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial, according to former senior campaign adviser Jason Miller on Newsmax TV.
Miller was asked about Trump's reaction to Saturday's vote that acquitted the former president, who was impeached by the House for inciting protesters to riot the Capitol on Jan. 6.
"Of course, the president was relieved," Miller told co-hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith on Monday's "Spicer & Co." "He was glad to be getting past this second impeachment witch hunt.”
Although Trump prevailed, Miller said the trial could have lingering effects.
"There's a little bit of a hollow victory, so to speak in that, yes, we're glad we're able to get past through this and knock it down," Miller said, "but this whole precedent the Democrats have now set that we're going to use impeachment as a political tool, this is really bad for the country. This is a terrible precedent."
As an example, Miller referred to [Rep.] Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., reportedly among a number of political figures who developed a relationship with a Chinese spy known as Christine Fang.
"I cannot stand Eric Swalwell, I would love to have Eric Swalwell up on that stand as a witness to ask him questions about Fang Fang," Miller said. "Yes, I obviously would love that as kind of a political nerd, but no, we do not need to impeach Eric Swalwell. We do not need to impeach [Rep.] Ilhan Omar, [D-Minn.,] or [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi,D-Calif.] This is for serious matters and we cannot be using it for political tool no matter what party."
